Autumn Magnetism

Difficulty:

Category: Jewelry

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Whimsical, Romantic, Outdoorsy, Casual, Cute, Funky, Mod

Materials

Red/rust square Mother of Pearl Donut beads, colorful Magnetic Hematite cubes and gold/green seed beads, with antiqued copper chain and copper S-hook clasp. Beadalon medium beading wire.

What was your inspiration?

The MOP donuts and hematite cubes came in the same shipment and just jumped out and said, "put us together, we're perfect for each other!" I had not planned it that way when I purchased them. It was just serendipity with the sizes and colors. The red MOP was more rust than red and the colorful Hematite is black, green, or blue depending on reflected light ... together they just brighten up any fall day.

What are you most proud of?

That I was able to get those darned, magnetic cubes lined up just so to properly pass a headpin through them and the donut bead for earrings. Bendable beading wire was a lot easier in making the necklace, but even so those little devils just wanted to attach themselves to everything in sight -- each other, my tools, the base of my worklight, etc. I'm also proud that the beads for this necklace and earring set cost a grand total of $8.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Bring your sense of humor when working with magnetic hematite.

This was one of the first pieces to sell at my first-ever jewelry show and party recently. I was sad to see it go because I had fun making it and love how it turned out, so much that I really thought of keeping it for myself. However, I can't keep it all and I sell my jewelry for the benefit of my church.
