Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Machine Quilting: Free-Motion & More »

Instructions

I drafted the patterns for the stars using CAD & photoshop but didn't have a plan on how to piece them together. I made all the stars and leaves using paper piecing. My first attempt to piece them together became to wavey at the edges so I stitched them onto a pieced backing by hand. Quilting was stitch in the ditch and echoing.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Outdoorsy

Materials

Quiliting cotton Bamboo batting

What was your inspiration?

Judy Mathersons Mariners Star Compass book and my mother wanted a quilt with autumn colours. This was my first compass quilt and the 2nd large quilt I have made ... far too ambitous for a beginner. I took this course to help motivate me to quilt this and finish it, which it did.

What are you most proud of?

That I actually finished it ... I started this quilt in March 2011

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Plan out your quilt before starting to piece fabric together. Consider the engineering aspect, not just the design as lots of bias pieces make the quilt strechy and hard to keep flat when quilting.

The leaves look more like stars but they look fantastic. I love the colours and they really express autumn. Great job and I bet lots of work.

Wow... what an ambitious project... but good for you to jump into the original design... we learn by jumping in and figuring out the different technical challenges that come along... lovely fall colors!
