Freeform Peyote Necklace

Aurora Borealis Necklace on model
Freeform Peyote Necklace

Instructions

I used Freeform peyote stitch to make this necklace. I started the necklace in the front - the first section worked vertically and then worked up both sides. I made a template of a 16" oval on paper and kept putting my beadwork up against it as I worked to maintain an opening for my neck.

Difficulty:

Category: Jewelry

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Formal / Bridal, Romantic

Materials

Seed beads of many sizes and shapes, pearls of many sizes and shapes, Swarovski crystals. Czech pressed glass. The glass lampwork bead used as the closure was made by me. Nymo D.

What was your inspiration?

A visit to Icleand in winter, and the the colors of the barren landscape.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I finished this necklace! It took a long time, on and off this project.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Experiment with a sample of Freeform Peyote first and then try making a bracelet first.

This necklace is just so beautiful - it is beyond words. I love your Ocean Bracelet, too. It will be a long, long time before I have the ability and the confidence to begin anything like this! Wonderful colours, shapes, design and amazing craftwomanship!

Thanks so much! If you have already worked in Peyote Stitch then its an easy and really fun jump into Freeform Peyote Stitch. Try gathering together colors you love in different sizes of beads and string on about 7 inches of beads (example; 7 blue 6/0 beads, 12 green 11/0 beads, 18 gold 15/0 beads, and so on until you reach 7 ") then turn your work around and start stitching peyot stitch according to color & size of beads. As you work back and forth along the 7" length make sure that the colors "blend" together instead of just creating "blocks" of color. Also incorporate crystals, pearls, etc and create bridges and valleys and gather areas together. When you have enough width, correct for length. Have fun and do try it!
