Type of item: Home Decor

Style: Retro / Vintage, Cute

Materials

Cotton fabric, black shirt, cushion filler

What was your inspiration?

I want a new black leather suite for my family room... so I thought if I made some cushions for it, then my husband would surely take the hint!!!
I saw a tutorial by Janet Wicknell, About.com Guide on Attic Qindows Quilt Blocks and just had to try it out.

What are you most proud of?

How my little 'attic windows' turned out :)
That I was able to work out the size of the blocks to make it smaller for a cushion and learn how to do mitered seams.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take your time choosing fabrics for this block, it is a good way to learn about tone on tone prints and co-ordinating colour.
I used a black shirt of my husbands, which he had never worn (actually not even out of the wrapper), for the back of the cushion... saves having to make buttonholes and sew buttons on :)

I think this block pattern is more suited to a quilt than a cushion, as it looses some of the pattern when filled with the cushion filler or maybe just make a larger cushion, mine was 16.5".

Thanks Lisa and I would reccommend this pattern for a larger quilt as I feel my little attic windows got kinda lost when stuffed with the pillow form. Cant wait to see yours:)

Thank you:) I was being super thrifty on this one as the fabric with the red and yellow flowers was a dress that my daughter was going to givie to the charity shop, but I got there first:) I have now looked out some other fully cottong items that will be in further projects:)

Very cool - Hubby should definitely pop for that leather suite! I really like the shirt back. Think I'll just have to use this for future pillow making. What an easy neat idea!

Thanks Pam, I just didn't want to have to make button holes and sew on buttons so the shirt was very handy. I am so pleased with the mitered corners and how it turned out.

I love attic windows - and the lovely bright colours you've used. What an excellent idea, to use a shirt! I think my husband may lock his shirt cupboard door now! Thanks!

Thanks Pat, I had only just come upon attic windows and simply had to try them. Haha my husband had never even got the shirt out of the wrapper as he didnt like it, so it was good to get some use out of it.
