What advice would you give someone starting this project? Have fun, use some of the structure of the original garments to help shape. Use lots of pieces to spread the color around and to create a more cohesive explosion of color. Do use good fitting--with exposed serging it is easy to make it fitted in flattering places and looser in less beloved areas.
