Arizona Lizard Jasper Sterling Pendant

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Category: Jewelry

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Traditional, Geeky, Mod, Romantic, Casual, Victorian / Steampunk, Classic, Funky, Holiday, Outdoorsy, Ethnic, Whimsical, Retro / Vintage, Cute, Hipster

Materials

natural Arizona lizard jasper freeform cabochon, argentium sterling wire

What was your inspiration?

I love this lizard jasper. The rich greens and greys look painted on the stone. I didn't want to do a standard wire wrap, so I did an open wrap instead, kind of like a lizard tail wrapped around the stone.

What are you most proud of?

This is my first attempt at this kind of wrap.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't be afraid. Just TRY it!

Did you use sterling silver wire? Could you use craft wire? I have never soldered any help put there?

I know what you mean about being so pleased when someone "GETS IT" when they see your jewelry. I love the piece that you did. With the beauty of the stone, I definitely agree that less is more. I would also like to know how you fused the wires together in the back. Did you solder them? Thanks for sharing your creation.

This is so nice! I love the open wrap idea. And I agree with you about not wanting to cover the stone with wire when it is already so pretty. I am new to wire wrapping so I want to know also did you fuse the wire together on the back?

I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona and I absolutely LOVE this artistic piece! I took a silversmithing class several years ago and this is as creative and lovely as anything I have done. Thank you for visually sharing it with us.

This piece was just included in the Craftsy newsletter I got this morning. It was the 1st thing I clicked on - beauty! I'm glad there were lots of previous comments because I got to learn a lot about your process through your answers. One more: is the back fused together? How does it stay on? Thanks for sharing this. -Nancy Cornett www.ausabledesigns.etsy.com

The ends are finished with a torch by heating them to the melting point until they ball up.

New to beadwork with wire wrapping. How do you get the rounded ends on each wire. It finishes the ends so beautifully. Thanks.

Wow! Thank you so much! It's wonderful when another artist "gets it". I'm a firm beliver that the stone will tell you what it needs if you just sit back and wait. Sometimes, I'll have a stone sitting on my work space for weeks before I have that "aha!" moment about it. Silly...maybe. But it's how I work best. I always try not to cover the stone. My trademark style has always been to keep the stone the focal, rather than the wrap. The "fluff" is above the stone or along the edge unless the stone isn't particularly pretty in its own right. This particular stone was cut and polished by a friend. I thought it was so unusual, that I didn't want to use a traditional wire wrap on it. Thanks again for your kind words. They are MUCH appreciated. Lynne

Hey Lynne, Boy, di I EVER "get it"! When I first started making jewelry, I kept seeing all these articles where these nationally or even internationaly known artist were being interviewed, all being asked the same question at some point! "So! Tell our readers, just exactly, where DO you get your inspiration from?" And the all had all these great answers! Some of them talk abouf their favorite place they've been in the world, or have vacationed, or some individual they've read about or known. But they ALL had these fantastic answers! For a LONG TIME, I really thought there was either something wrong with me, cause I couldn't answer that question! Or...I must be approaching my process ALL WRONG! Then one day I thought I realized that, "OH MY GOD! I DON'T HAVE A MUSE! Ihave NO source of inspiration!!!" I actually almost quit making jewelry because of it. Then I was talking to someone one day, and mentioned it to her, and I suddenly realized how wrong I had been!!! I did, in fact have a muse!!! My muse was my beads!!! I don't buy beads with a project based in my head, or at least not very often! I don't even buy beads and try to coordinate them! I simply buy the beads that "TALK" to me! I take them home and I hang them up and there thry stay until they "TELL" ct, h

sorry!! I hit the wrong stupid button!! As I was trying to say, they hang right there until they tell me what they want to be! The BEADS ARE MY MUSE! There simply aren't words to describe the relief I felt when I had that realization! After that...we were off to the races! Now, I can't imagine NOT making jewelry! Keep up the great work! ~~Shelly~~

I have done the same thing, sitting a stone out till it told me what it needed. One stone I had sat out for months and I still didn't know what it needed. So I put it back in the stash. One of these days I'll have an ahha moment and know what I need to do. Great work by the way.

Absolutely GORGEOUS! Whether it was accidental or intentional, you have captured the very essence of less is more. WAY to often we artsy, crafty, jewelry types seem to have a tendency to look at a piece and over think it, or look at it for to long and decide "It's just missing something!" And we keep adding and taking away and adding and adding, until we ultimately put it down, sometimes satisfied, sometimes dissatisfied. But either way we've become to close to realize how frequently LESS IS OFTEN MORE! That in simplicity we may have actually created our "masterpiece". It really is beautiful and you really did do a GREAT job!!!

I appreciate seeing the back!! That helps so much with trying a design like this on one's own. (Good job asking, jenfwed) The stone is beautiful, too - and the wrap shows it off well.
