Quilting: April BOM - Block 2

April BOM - Block 2,

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Instructions

I totally deviated from the English paper piecing hexes - this square was done with paper piecing. It took me alot longer than I thought it would, but I have always wanted to try making the freeform Flying Geese, glad I did. I love it!

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Whimsical

Materials

Cotton quilting fabric - black and white

What was your inspiration?

I have seen free form Flying geese used in borders and have always wanted to figure out how to do it. I love Flying geese and triangles!

What are you most proud of?

The way it turned out - it is pretty "arty" for me - I rarely use curves, so was glad it turned out as well as it did.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Since my other advise was to "Skip April" I think this advise would be do whatever you have been wanting to try!

I love what you did with the flying geese. I have also admired the free form flying geese and they are on my list of things to figure out when school is out. (I teach special education first graders.) Do you have any tips that you'd like to share? I'm also making a black and white BOM quilt and I enjoy seeing your blocks. Both of your April blocks are extraordinary. Thanks for sharing!

I would recommend Gail Garber's Flying Colors book - it is great and explains everything!

I drew up a pattern on freezer paper before I started, was not as hard as I originally thought.

I drew it up myself - but did need to get a Wright's EZ flex design rule, just drew it on freezer paper and it worked great! So guess it is an "Original"

I really struggled with what to do for April -- am finishing up the first of two blocks -- my Mountain Dragonfly -- but it is *way* more work (and harder) than I thought it would be. So... I'm still running about a month behind. ;-) So, it's good to have folks finishing up and sharing! I love it!

Hey! What happened to my comment?! I got all done with it and it disappeared! Well.. hmmph... I *love* this block! It is sooooo snazzy I can hardly stand it! Way to triumph, Sewpippy! Well done! (This is totally different from my first comment, btw.) ;-)

Many Many thanks! It is "totally out there" for me - the one that likes to "color within the lines" :-)

Very cool, almost reverse applique there at the end! It was very tempting to skip April, but I did the racing strip block. I skipped the Sunny With Chance of Hex and reduced the hex size down to about a dime and made a traditional flower garden instead. Still sewing that together. There are 210 hexes in that 12.5 x 12.5 inch block.

I too, have been dragging my heels on the April blocks, but love what you did instead! Very cool.

210 Hexes! Anxious to see - but would be way too painful for me ! ENJOY!
