Instructions

There are many patterns on the market today for this type of quilt although this one was made about 50 years ago judging by the fabrics used. Some are poly and some are cotton so it isn't really old. It is an antique however.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Traditional, Retro / Vintage

Materials

This antique top was purchased from a shop in WA. I bought some batting and white cotton for the backing. I hand quilted it myself with a huge hoop about two ft wide using long, thin needles and top-st thread in white. It took three months to finish. I put deep red binding for a pop of color and I think that works well.

What was your inspiration?

I was shopping in an antique store in Vancouver, WA where we lived for a time and along with another one called La Moyne Star, I took them home and started hand quilting them. I did three of these.

What are you most proud of?

That I had the energy and knowledge to get it done. It did take three months and I got carpal tunnel after quilting three of these antique quilts. All are posted here on Craftsy.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This is a very detailed and time consuming project. I would never make a DW myself from scratch. I know those who have done it and loved the process. But, I am not that patient so I opted for buying the top and than hand quilting it.

It is very pretty. Looks like you did a great job quilting it. I made one about 30 years ago for my daughter's bed and she still has it. It's all hand made from piecing to quilting and it took me a year. But it was worth it. I'm sure you will enjoy it for years to come!

Well, I can't say that is the case here. I did not do it myself like you did. I wish I could say that I did but it was done by someone else and if I said I did it, well......no use to go on. I do love it but it's my fave. I may be giving it to our youngest newly married daughter living in OH and it would be nice on those warmer nights. They use a down in the winter.....any wonder? Thanks for you kind comments.
