What advice would you give someone starting this project?

... a word on blocking... the icelandic yarn I am using really wants to be washed after knitting. I do this on the wool cycle of my washing machine, cold, with special wool detergent. I then let the machine spin it at full speed. When I get the item out it is damp - not wet - and can easily be shaped and pulled into proper shape and size (also applies to sweaters)... or with this lace shawl I pin it onto the guest mattress and hope that I get all the pins out again when I am done :)...
( I have a german washing machine that can be trusted with this, the garments come out super nice, better than hand washed!!! but I suppose it depends on your machine).
