What was your inspiration?
Animals and making anything with my hands! I have been hand sculpting for many years, and just love to turn a piece of clay into a fun and silly animal doing some bizarre thing...
What are you most proud of?
Many of the best pieces I have made are now gone, either given as gifts or sold, and I didn't start taking pictures of them until many years into the making of them, but Okapi and Geoffrey were more recent and great fun to make (and a challenge!) I also do beadwork, amulets, jewelry and more, and embroidery.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Start working the clay (I prefer Sculpey because it remains pliable until you bake it, so you can put it down and come back to it later if you need to). Work it in your hands until it's softer and easier to work with and mold it into whatever comes into your head: be it a hand, a bird, a snake, a foot, a bear, a cat....whatever you feel like it should be! I use small sculpting tools, pins, toothpicks, all kinds of implements for shaping, pushing, creasing, nudging, whatever works for you...let the vision in your head come out through your hands!
