Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Shoot It! A Product Photography Primer »

Instructions

I used my Canon 550d/Rebel T2i on a large aperture for a close depth of field. F5.0, ISO200 with the camera being held steady on the back of a chair.

Difficulty:

Category: Spinning

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Retro / Vintage, Classic, Romantic

Materials

Alpaca silk roving from Southern Alpaca's in New Zealand being spun fairly fine for a 2-ply yarn

What was your inspiration?

I really like close up photo's with the background blurred, especially for spinning shots as the wheel can be distracting.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I got a clear shot with the long shutter time, that was hard work without a tripod. Used the back of an old chair to hold it steady. Also proud that I actually managed to find what I wanted in the manual, that thing is a bit of a pain to read.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Get past the fear of the manual, it's worth it!

Love your colour mixes, have spun alpaca in the past, also baby camel which is also very soft if spun from the fold rather than a woolen spin, am on with spinning merino at the present for a winter cardigan for my daughter, have done quite a few different projects of late as we've had quite a lot of rain here in the u.k this past few weeks, so you have inspired me to start thinking about xmas now. x x

Thank you, it's a little more muted than my normal choices, but I'm loving it. I've got some camel down to spin at some point as well as a whole heap of other fibres. I definitely prefer animal fibre to plant though. Hopefully I'll have some knitting photo's soon too. Currently working on socks and frilly cuffs.
