I posted a free knitting pattern on my blog.My guys like a light weight but warm hat, one they can scrunch up and stick in their pocket but when they put it on it needs to keep them warm! The folded over “cuff” should not be too deep and when it’s folder over the hat sits just over the tip of the ears but when it’s pulled down against the cold it goes right over those ears completely.

Materials
This one is knit with Austerman Peru Alpaca yarn (now discontinued, Im afraid). Its a lovely soft sport weight Alpaca.
What was your inspiration?
My son Dan wanted a lightweight simple winter hat and DH put in all his special requirement too and this was the result. Thus, the one that guys really want to wear.
What are you most proud of?
They actually wear them :-)
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I used a light sport weight in this version with the same needles as originally required by the pattern and it turned out fine. The fabric has lots of stretch and is quite forgiving. Choose a natural fiber yarn with the kind of properties that will keep you warm such as Alpaca, Angora, Bison, Cashmere, Merino Wool etc.
You can order custom handspun yarns at my site http://www.nancyelizabethdesigns.com/product-category/hand-spun/
be sure to order 1 Superfine "fingering" weight
