Cotton fabrics and batiks
What was your inspiration?
I wanted to make something funky and fun for my oldest son, who plays guitar. I saw the fabric and knew I had found what I was looking for!
What are you most proud of?
This is one of my first quilting projects, and one of the first I machine quilted on a quilt frame. I made a quilt for each of my boys that year, which had been a goal of mine for some time. I tried to incorporate something special on each quilt, and Alex's quilt reminded me of a song I always sang to him as a lullaby when he was little ... After the Goldrush, by Neil Young. Alex always called it "The Nature Song". I embroidered the lyrics with a special message to Alex and attached that to the back of the quilt. It makes me happy to think that, even though his is 27 years old and lives far away, I'm still there to "sing" him a lullaby.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Make sure you start out with enough fabric. Initially I only bought a yard of the "guitar" fabric at a quilt store I stumbled upon while traveling, and had to go on a wild goose chase to find more once I realized I didn't have enough!
