I made this as a Christmas gift for my son-in-law. He lives in the mountains in CO and is constantly shoveling snow! This double knit from alpaca will definitely keep him warm.

Did you find alpaca a bit scratchy to be worn around the neck? What other fibers would you recommend that. Could be used instead? Not wool nor acrylic...

I don't have sensitivity to most any animal fiber so I can't really answer that. I find alpaca to be great. As for other fibers, I would use anything you usually find comfortable for scarves. The only caveat I would give is to be careful about the weight. My experience is that double knit tends to stretch over time so fibers like cotton that are already stretchy might not be a good choice. I hope that helps.
