Hi there, We live in NZ and our daughter is right into highland dancing. I am looking for a pattern to be able to make her an outfit as she is only 3 and a size 2 I am having trouble finding something. Are you able to help?
Hi...you can easily adapt a regular pattern for a simple vest I'm sure, and just add the petals. The skirt is just a gathered skirt that doesn't require a pattern, but you should also be able to find a regular commercial pattern for a simple skirt in her size. Your daughter is too young to compete, so it doesn't have to be to regulations. Unfortunately, the patterns that are available for these costumes don't come as small as your daughter's size.
Please don't hesitate if you have any questions...I'd be happy to help!
Thanks so much, I am not a sewer, but boy would love to be able to make something like this. Never thought to break it down to a skirt, vest, etc that is wonderful advise. Also I would be able to get simple basic patterns to start to learn with. She did her first dance on the stage in front of a hall of people at our Ceilidh and loved it, Thought if I made something similar to the other girls she will feel a little bit special, as full dance gear over here is very expensive over $500 second hand and well used thought making something might be a good option. Thanks so much for the advise. Your costumes are very inspiring :)
Can you tell me where to find tutorial or a pattern with explanation to make the aboyne skirt ? I'm desparate to find one. thank you Julie Perron
Love this. I have to make one for my daughter this year. I'm going to try your suggestion and use a vest pattern. The official Aboyne bodice pattern is so expensive, especially with how fast my daughter grows.
I don't know how old your daughter is, but if you have a look at the Simplicity or Butterick patterns - in their costume section - you'll find a pattern very similar to the Aboyne vest. (I think it might be Butterick) Wouldn't take too much to adapt it. I think the pattern I'm thinking of may be in adult sizing though - not sure if they have one for a younger child.
