Simplicity 2172 Victorian Steam Punk Costume »

Instructions

This is a challenge well worth taking! It's a lot of work but also a lot of fun to wear.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Costume

For: Women

Style: Whimsical, Victorian / Steampunk, Funky, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Green taffeta, black organza, black & white striped cotton shirting, antique-inspired buttons.

What was your inspiration?

I made this costume for myself after making the blue steam punk dress (see my other projects on Craftsy) for my sister. And what other motivation does one need for Victorian Steam Punk... other than the fact that it's super cool?

What are you most proud of?

I made all three pieces in the evenings after work over a two week period. I still can't believe I finished in time! I'm also proud that I bargained my fabric supplier down to $3/yard, so it was a great deal for 11 yards of taffeta.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

This was a VERY challenging pattern and as a seasoned sewist, even I had to rip out seams to figure out some of the construction. I would definitely do this pattern again and maybe try it in the khaki color that is on the pattern envelope. But if you attempt this pattern, I would give yourself a very long lead time--the devil is in the details here.

I love this pattern! I looked at it today for a Steampunk Ball I'll be going to in November. But I am not a seasoned seamstress. Will I be able to do this if I've never sewn clothes? I've only ever done quilts. It looks amazing on you, by the way!

Oh, fun! That sounds like a super fun event! If you're not seasoned seamstress I think you can still make this if you have basic sewing skills under your belt, patience, and you give yourself a LOT of lead time. If you started working on it now, you'd have plenty of time. There is a lot of detail in this dress and sometimes just the fabric yardage alone is challenging to work with. But it's so fun wearing it when it's complete! Thanks for the compliments! I'm so glad you liked this project! I would definitely make another one--maybe safari-khaki style like the example on the pattern envelope. Can't wait to see your finished project! :)
