This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Painted Pictorial Quilts »

Instructions

I decided to use as a model a portrait of a girl by Tamara Lempicki who was famous for her portraits in art deco period in 1920s/30s. She painted with strong contrast which helped me find shading values in my interpretaton of the painting. Since I had only her painting in black and white, the choice of colours is mine.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Cute

Materials

white cotton, black cotton, paints and dyes in primary colours

What was your inspiration?

A portrait by a famous artist Tamara empicki

What are you most proud of?

Completing my piece has taken me quite a lot of time as I decided to practise some drawing and watercolour painting in order to understand how artists see reality. And unexpectedly I discover that I can draw and paint quite easily and I really like it.
And as usual I mixed my paints and dyes using only primary colours.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just do it and have fun.

Excellent choice, I also love Lempicki's style - but your colorations are luscious. (Would you say the actual colors you used are closer to the ones revealed in the flash photo, or the photo without flash?) You have natural talent which will get even get better as you develop your "hand" and observations. Hope you find joy in the learning as well as the finishing! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Pam Sews for your warm reply. The actual colours I used are somewhere in between, definitely warmer than in the flash photo. In my opinion using flash flatens the picture and highlights white brush strokes too much. I prefer taking pictures in the sun and avoid using a flash as often as possible. Unfortunately we do not have many sunny days in Poland in winter.
