I followed instructions from an English cake book and used marzipan under the fondant and got a smooth surface. I was pleased with how that worked out and my aunt loves marzipan so good all around. What was your inspiration?
My aunts love flowers....so I wanted a cake with lots of them!
What are you most proud of?
I spent hours and hours making these flowers, I'm a teacher with a long summer vacation and I decided to learn something new so I took the course on sugar flowers. I took a one day course 7 years ago because I wanted to make flowers for my son's wedding cake, but then they moved the wedding date and there was no time so I never made any after the class. I spent a fortune on the cutters originally with high hopes, but then they stayed in a box for 7 years so it was now or never.....It was a struggle at first, but now I'm hooked.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I set up a work station (sweatshop) in front of the t.v. and worked on the flowers over weeks....the fact that they will keep well packaged was an added bonus. I have several boxes put away for future cakes.....once the flowers are finished the cake is a breeze! Relax....take your time....enjoy!
