Materials

(1) Fat Quarter, (1) 4" Wood Embroidery Hoop (inside ring only), Light Weight Cardboard (big enough for (2) 4" circles), Light Weight Batting for (1) 4" Circle, Matching Thread

What was your inspiration?

Are you forever missing the trash with those pieces of threads and the little pieces of fabric that get trimmed off when sewing? Well this is the perfect solution: A Thread Catcher - it's a portable trash can! Small and unique and you can personalize it just by the fabric you select. That was my inspiration - as you see in the photo I like animals :)

What are you most proud of?

After learning how to make these from a friend in my quilt guild, I made 25 or so of these for a charity event to help raise money for the Humane Society and they all sold out! FAST! Should have made more!
I had some problems with the original instructions, they were a little hard to understand in spots so...I rewrote the instructions and included images - this should help in creating your own thread catchers.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The perfect place to shop is Hobby Lobby. They usually carry the embroidery hoops and I've found have the cheapest pricing - much cheaper than Michaels.

This makes a perfect gift for your sewing buddies. It's fast, easy and inexpensive!

It closes up so you can make one to keep with your sewing basket or sewing machine travel case, one to keep next to your sewing machine and one to keep on the end table where you do all your hand sewing!

What is the thickness of the cardboaerd you use it looks very thin,Thank you.
23 hours ago   Flag as inappropriate
It doesn't take much! I was using the little piece of cardboard that comes in with fat quarters you get at Joannes... but they were a little to thin. They worked but just a little flimsey (sp?) I would say the best thickness would be those scotch photo mailers you can get to mail pictures in. they aren't real thick just nice and sturdy.

Sorry -- didn't see this post until today.. I responded above. It was VERY thin... in fact I think when I wrote up the instructions I used 'heavy' bond paper for my demo. Even with the two pieces together it was a little too thin, but it took a nice picture :)

Apr 04, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
All the comments and suggestions are GREAT! Because of them, the next bunch I made I used plastic canvas I had laying around instead of cardboard. (I made these for a longarmer friend who gives them to her customers.

oh and any donations to myself or a chimp organization would be greatly welcomed.. :)
Mar 25, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
awesome, I am always looking for new ideas to create fleece and enrichment pieces for chimpanzees... I donate to many chimp sancuaries in the US... These chimps that have lived a life of testing and abuse absolutely love new toys!!! :) thanks

Mar 18, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
Love all the ideals for this one!! Great and Thank You!!
Mar 01, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
I used plastic canvas instead of hoop to cut cost. I didn't wnat to give up my hoop. Worked out real well.
Apr 22, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
plus- it is machine washable! three dogs in my home make everything a dog hair catcher too! Great idea~
Feb 25, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
I have some fabric with spools of thread on it that I was planning to use to make a sewing maching cover, but never got around to it. I'm going to use that fabric and hopefully figure out how to make one for each of my classmates at the senior center quilting class I am attending.
Feb 29, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
There is a FREE pattern above to make it easier for you!
Mar 01, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Decided to use owl fabric instead. Wonder if using a vinyl interior would make emptying easier.
Feb 23, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
Great idea...great project! I'm off to give it a try!
Feb 15, 2012    Flag as inappropriate

Jan 24, 2012    Flag as inappropriate

Feb 13, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
I don't understand your question...If you can elaborate I'll be more than happy to reply.
Mar 07, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
I think maybe its this question "How does it work?"
Jan 17, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
Wow, I've read all your comments about this little product and I'm "IN" ...so many suggestions on how to make them....my thread is all over the floor in my sewing studio and piling up in my big basket trash can...lol....thanks for the idea....I've made square ones without a sturdy bottom, as so many have suggested....thanks...these also hold tissues in the car and on the desk....and business cards for us ladies on the go....
Jan 15, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
AWESOME! Thanks for sharing the pattern!
Jan 15, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
this is awesome and everyone who sews should have at least 2 great holiday gift idea for next year.
Jan 11, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
Got to make this! I never have a place for my yarn ends. Thanks so much. They would make great gifts for sewing buddies and fun door prices at quilting shows. Thanks a ton!
Jan 09, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
Wonderful suggestions everyone! I keep filing them away for when I make my next stash of catchers! If they start to 'fall' a little where they don't stand up. turn them inside out and use them -- :) I use one for a 'catch all' too.. little odds and ends that gather on my sewing table - pins, threads, thimbles, even small scissors!
Apr 23, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Hadn't thought of that, and I'm always collecting bobbins and thread and maybe a foot or 2 that I am using frequently and it looks messy.
Apr 23, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
LinnRupp -- did you know you can use toe separator thingy to hold your extra bobbins. They fit in there just perfect. Stops the thread from going everywhich way! and they even stand up. Great little idea to share with fellow sewers!
Apr 23, 2012   Flag as inappropriate

Jan 08, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
Hi everybody, liked the idea very much. Assuming you would like an extra suggestion for low cost and extra stability use damaged cds or dvds for the bottom (2 or more). Also instead of using wood embroidery hoops try plastic hoop like frames (I use DMC but you might have them under another brand name), They are also cheap and you could use both the inside and outside since they will eventually be covered. The hanging part screw is removable. They come in many shapes and sizes round, oval, square and the extra bonus is that eventually you can wash your catchers without fear ruining your project. Hope my idea helps. Michailia
Jan 06, 2012    Flag as inappropriate
you can adapt these to make square catchers too. these are fantastic for sitting on the counter to catch odds n ends in your kitchen too. i made several for my desks as well to catch discks etc
Dec 29, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I totally need to whip myself up a couple of these! I just finished cleaning off my sewing table and the thread content was NOT PRETTY!!! Great idea!
Dec 25, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
fyi....i have made these before and use a 1 inch strip cut from a clorox bottle. Just cut around the large part of the bottle whatever length you want......works perfect and cost nothing.
Dec 27, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
We don't have 'Clorox' in the UK. What is it or what size is the bottle?
Dec 29, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Chlorox is laundry bleach. A round 1 gallon liquid container - it's fairly heavy plastic.. also comes in a smaller size too.
Feb 05, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
You could use a strip from a gallon vinegar jug, too. (We use alot of vinegar when I make pickled eggs)
Dec 25, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I love this. great grab bag gifts at all my quilting functions
Dec 17, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Just finished making two of these. Great idea!!!
Dec 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I love this idea, especially as I also have cats. I used to just toss snippings of fabric and threads onto my sewing table, sooner or later the thing I am making would pick them up and force me to clean them off it. I used to hang a used Spam can from one end of my machine to put threads in, but the fabric in this little beauty will hold them much better. If your sewing machine is near the edge of a table, you could attach a fabric "strap" to the thread catcher, rest one end of the machine on the end of the strap, and let the catcher hang over the edge of the table.
Nov 30, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I've been using a piece of Velcro to grab all the loose threads, I can't wait to make this catcher. Maybe I'll add some Velcro to the inside edges of this so it will help nab those stinky loose threads that like to float around ( I find them everywhere)!
Nov 09, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Thanks for sharing! This will help me a lot in keeping my work area clean :)
Nov 09, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
It's done wonders for me -- although I still have the few rouge threads that hit the floor and those that cling to anything I wear.
Nov 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
great idea
Nov 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
possibly I should have mentioned..that the center of the lid would have to be cut out.. to use that outside part.. (smile)
Nov 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
this is a splendid Idea!! just a thought... at one time I heard a 'CRAFTER' replace those hoops with plastic container and their lids.. ?? just an idea.. would probably have to be as strong as an ice cream bucket..but; some foods come in smaller like containers!! (recyling...after your hoop storage is gone) lol
Nov 03, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
fantabulous idea (yes I got the 'outside part' hee hee)
Dec 15, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Since I have a large food storage, with a lot of #10 cans, I'm thinking that an empty #10 can would make a solid but lightweight foundation for a thread catcher. Any thoughts on this?
Nov 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
These will work brilliantly in my bathroom for hair accessories. Thank you so much for adding this project!
Nov 01, 2011    Flag as inappropriate

Oct 13, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I can't wait to make these. A great gift for knitters, too. I'm going to a retreat and will make one for each lady!
Oct 11, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
It's beautiful! But. What is (1) Fat Quarter? Gracie B.
Oct 12, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
A fat quarter is 1/2 of a 1/2 hard of fabric -- or 18" by roughtly 19 to 21" depending on how wide the fabric it was cut from is.
Oct 12, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
that's YARD not HARD .. I need to fire my proof reader !!
Oct 14, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
It's a pre-cut quarter of fabric. ( I think they are just a bit wider and not a long as a quarter if you were to get it cut.) They are usually right by the fabric folded into squares. They are most often $ .99-$2.00.
Nov 20, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
It is a quarter yard of fabric, but cut on the fold of a half yard, rather than 9 inches of the entire width.
Oct 02, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I love the thread catcher much better looking than my ice cream container
Oct 19, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I like using the empty cube tissue boxes. I just remove the plastic peice and it work great.
Oct 22, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Hummmm...I like the idea of the ice cream container also -- a little mode podge...cute! Great for home sewing. This pattern is great for a take it with ya!
Sep 30, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Muy buena idea, til y sencilla. Gracias.

Sep 19, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Are you in Houston, TX (where I know there are Hobby Lobbys (Lobbies)?
Sep 20, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
No, the Atlanta (Georgia) area. :)
Dec 15, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
They are all over. I am seeing them springing up all over Utah. There is even one in the SMALL town where I live; just opened up within the past year. They're great!
Sep 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I absolutely love this. It is so cute and useful!
Sep 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Great idea!! I hate vacuuming up all those threads...
Sep 13, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
yeah - and they get tangled up in the roller bar!!! ugh!
Aug 31, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I made one for myself and gave hoops and the instructions to my crafting group so they can make one. It is so useful and cute!!!
Sep 02, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
And they are 'personalized' to you - since you get to choose your fabric!
Aug 29, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Great little project! Seems like you could use something like a plastic lid or something like that instead of an embroidery hood. Why not recycle?
Sep 02, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
great idea - I think if you read a couple of the other posts, they also mention using different items as a way to recycle!
Aug 27, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Absolutely Fantastic! My dog ate the outer ring of my embroidery hoop - now I have something to do with the inner ring!!!! Thanks sooooo much! I keep everything - just in case - this time I get to use up some junk! You are a genius! x
Aug 27, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
giggle....
Aug 16, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
What a cute little project! I love it and I'm gonna make one today! I use an empty tissue box for my thread catcher, but that doesn't have any charm! Thanks for sharing!
Aug 16, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Never thought of using a tissue box, great way to recycle. The bright side, is you can probably use the sides of your tissue box for the card board bases. I'd just double them up though so they are a little stronger.
Dec 28, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I have taped small paper bag to the end of my sewing table to use as a thread catcher, When it wears out I just hang another one and it doesn't cost thing.
Aug 13, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
What an original idea. Threads put in a non-fabric container just slip out.
Aug 13, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
What makes them stand up without collapsing? Cute idea!
Aug 13, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I think I responded below - it's MAGIC - I honestly don't know they just do... I think if the fabric was any taller they wouldn't.
Apr 14, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
They are held up by that invisable cord, like the one that connects the laptop to the ICloud...haha.
Aug 05, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Very cute. Can't wait to try it!
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
What an awesome idea! Something I would like to make.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
You could replace the hoop with a section of that plastic straping from boxes of paper to recycle and make it lighter weight.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Looks like a great project!
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Very nice and easy and so practicable!!
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I love it! I plan to make some and give to my quilting group. We make quilts for the Bay Area Crisis Nursery.
Oct 21, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
These would be good in a nursery to hold all sorts of little things to keep them handy
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Great idea, just the thing for a project for 'Quilt Camp'. I can see it being used to hold a can of soda or a bottle of water on my sewing station.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
These are so cute! I think they would also be useful for our non-sewing friends to organize lightweight items on a desk or dresser.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I thought those thread bits were SUPPOSED to be floor decoration... Who Knew?
Aug 04, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
ROFLMBO tee hee....
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Love your idea, however, I cannot get to the pattern. Any advice?
Aug 04, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Are you still having problems getting to the pattern - let me know if so - PM me on facebook if you can with your email and I'll send it to you.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Ask your fav fabric shop to save the plastic web strapping from the cardboard boxes. Cheaper than emb hoops and you get to recycle something that is thrown away. Love the catchers.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Holy smokes did someone's guild or bee discover this .... Comments and likes everywhere. Woo hoo. I updated the words to the pattern link should make it easier to find now. I fixed my 'machine' typo thanks for letting me know. Plastic is a ggggrrrreat idea starting to hoard plastic now Tee hee. woo hoo on recycling...and best of of all helping out our kitties live longer and less threadful lives.
Oct 21, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Keeping them where my cat doesn't get them is a really good thing.

great idea. We have veg boxes delivered and with any cold goods they pack the box with woolen wadding. Another way I can recycle this!

Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
So much nicer than the large jam jar I use at the moment.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
So far I've made two of them and just wish I had more sewing friends to make some more. I have replaced the cardboard with heavy plastic so it's hand washable, just in case it gets into the hands of my youngest grandson! I used a divider from a notebook.
Aug 13, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I will be your sewing friend!LOL
Feb 25, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
great idea. I want mine washable too.
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I was not successful in finding the directions either:(
Aug 04, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
This is a wonderful idea. I have to be careful of loose threads because my cat loves it. He cost me a large vet bill to save his life by eating thread. Advice, be careful if you have cats. If they swallow the thread it can be life threatening. Thank you for this pattern.
Aug 04, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Agreed! I work at a vet and know first hand that thread-swallowing (esp if it loops around the tongue or teeth) is DEADLY!
Aug 13, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I have cats too and they will get in the little trash can by the machine. I now put thread in the top drawer of my sewing table. This is such a great idea.
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Go to the area that says project and click on the orange word "thread catcher". Was hard to find. I just got lucky.
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I'd like to make this project, but I can't find what to click on to get the instructions to make it, please help.
Aug 20, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Under the picture of the thread catcher is Orange/Red words and that is what you click on it will show you the all you need to know pictures included
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
what a cute idea
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Nice and bright..well done
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Just paid $8.00 for this pattern, should have looked here first. LOL
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I'm looking forward to trying out this pattern for gifts for all my sewing friends and one for me.......
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I do not see where the pdf. file is to down load with the instructions on how to make this. Maybe I am thick today but please help this is so very cute and looks so very useful. Thanks
Aug 03, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Just above the "Difficulty" meter, click on the words Thread Catcher! Got me the first time I saw one of these posts
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate

Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Sorry was just me I figured it out
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Is it just me or what I can't seem to find the instructions on how to actually make one of these baskets?
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Oops,found it! Thank you!
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
How much did you charge for these items for your charity? We are doing one in October and would like to know. Thanks.
Aug 03, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I think we went with $3.00 .... and they went fast!
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I can't seem to find the pattern. What am I doing wrong??? Very cute by the way!
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
BTW the rest of the tutorial looks like something I might do! Sorry about the previous post...some things just drive me nuts! That's one of them...along with "seen" instead of "saw". :0)
Aug 03, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
I'm going to assume i made a typo in my instructions. I'll track it down as soon as i get to a pc. too hard on the phone.
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
machinE not G
Mar 18, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
i would think with free instructions that a typo would NOT matter so much,if you can understand the INSTRUCTIONS!!!
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
<3
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
How neat! I'll be making one soon!
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Can't wait to try it out. I really hope it stands up. ?????
Aug 03, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
It'll stand up...trust me :)
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Cute!!!
Aug 03, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
I wonder how boning would work for the top edge?
Aug 03, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
hmm hadn't thought about that, but i have some. May have to try.
Aug 04, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
good idea
Aug 01, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
It would also come in handy for other crafts. Great idea!! I am going to try to make one but how did you get it to stand up?
Aug 02, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
Its magic! really - It just stands up on its own.
Jul 30, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
Looks like fun
Jul 30, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
They are fun... after the initial 'tube' its mostly hand sewing - although if your machine can handle it you may be able to stitch around the hoop. I hand sewed...
Jul 14, 2011    Flag as inappropriate
LOVE that it's portable...now I need to go upgrade my Adobe 'sew' I can make one! thanks for sharing :0)
Jul 14, 2011   Flag as inappropriate
