Materials

plastic storage bins in varying sizes, or other containers to be used as molds, portland cement, perlite, peat moss, drop cloth, face mask, gloves, cement coloring (optional), large plastic mixing tub or tray (like for cement), chicken wire, wire cutters, small shovel and trowel, wire brush, drill with masonry bit, plastic wrap, broom handle, or tamping stick,

What was your inspiration?

European gardens

What are you most proud of?

I am most pleased that this is such a workable design. I also enjoy the sense of rustic, artistic satisfaction with each finished planter.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The detailed instructions are for making a trough. To get some practice, make up a few molded bowl-shaped planters before attempting this trough. The bowl shaped planters don't need a pattern. Simply use the recipe for hypertufa mixture, and take, let's say, a large, stainless steel bowl. Turn it upside down, cover with plastic wrap (for easy removal) and pile tufa mixture all over it, patting until you get a rough, pleasing shape. Poke hole in bottom, let harden, and shape with wire brush to desired finish.

I love this look and that all sizes and shapes can be made from it. Thanks for sharing.

Could this mixture be used for stepping stones?

Ifyou plan to walk on them, no. The ligfhtweight, porous hypertufa material breaks more easily than concrete.

They're beautiful and would look great in my garden. I've saved the project and am going to try them in the spring. Are they safe enough to use as a bird bath?

If you don't put dye in the mix, what colour are they?
Jan 26, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
grey, a cement-like color, which isn't too bad with the shape and texture, but I like a little color.

I am a senior citizen and would find this quite intimidating, but have wanted one or two for some time. Is there someone out there that makes these for sale?

I would checkwith a local garden center. Perhaps they would know of a source. Hypetufa containers are especially nice for seniors because you get the look of stone without the terrible heaviness. A hypertufa put is easy to lift and move around--however, one the size of this trough is still a bit on the weighty side.

This is one I would love to do sometime. I actually wrote down the recipe for the mixture years ago and came across it again in my recipe box!! (ha ha ha) Only takes about 24 hrs to cure and would make a lovely present for anyone who loves gardening.

I really like this and love the rustic look - how long do you think these planters would hold up? I am thinking they might break down over time? Thanks for the great idea and the directions!

I have some 10 yrs old, and no signs of breaking down. I will say this, I have had one or two break after a while, but they had walls thinner than 2 inches.

I've been making and teaching Hypertufa planters with fellow Master Gardeners for about four years now. This article describes our procedure very closely. It's a fun and rewarding project and I highly recommend giving it a try!

Gloria, I suggest getting a couple of friends to share the expense and clean-up and go for it! Read and follow the directions closely and you'll have a wonderful planter.

"Lowes" or "Home Depot" would have portland cement and most of the other ingredients too.

It will cost about $20.00 to purchase the 3 ingredients~~
