Quilting: 4-patch crib quilt

4-patch crib quilt

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Children

Style: Cute, Traditional, Casual

Materials

Cotton teddy bear print, Cotton ticking print, Cotton backing fabric, Bamboo batting

What was your inspiration?

Had the different fabrics in my 'stash' and thought they would work up well. I had just purchased a bamboo batt and wanted to use if in a baby quilt because of its natural anti-bacterial properties, and to see how it would feel to hand quilt.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

The bamboo batting is much softer than Warm and Natural (in my opinion), and it was easy to needle when hand quilting. I would recommend this batt for all quilts for infants and children.

All it is is 4-patch blocks that were made from 2-1/2" squares (they finish to 2" squares), set on point with 2-1/2" muslin sashing strips. It is a very easy quilt. Sorry I don't have a printed pattern as is the case with most of my quilts. I just take a 'traditional pattern' (in this case the 4-patch) and work out the design on a scrap of paper. I will try to find a link for you as to how to set a quilt 'on point'. It starts in the left corner with a triangle. The the rows are put together diagonally, instead of straight across or straight up and down.

Here is a link with measurements to set a quilt 'on point'. http://quiltbug.com/Articles/on-point.htm I modified mine by putting 2-1/2" sashing strips between each block and between rows. So you would have adjust for that. I suggest you work it out on graph paper, and you will be surprised as to just how simple it really is. If you need further help, e-mail me at dottyeb@live.com and I will help you out.

Nice quilt. Love the hand stitching. It's nice to know that there are others out there that still hand quilt.

I love to hand quilt. I am from the old school, and love the softness and charm of hand quilting. Machine quilting, in my opinion has very little 'personality'. It is always so cold and mechanical looking. However, in this day and age, I guess we have to recognize the beauty and charm of machine quilting too. Still prefer hand quilting. It is so relaxing of an evening to sit in a nice comfortable chair and quilt.
