It's made with a basic worsted weight yarn from the top down in a shell pattern. The brim holds shade because you use 2 strands of yarn and then to finish it off and make the rows and rows ends smooth by adding a sc row around the entire hat at the very end. The pattern has 3 styles of hat tops and 2 sizes of brims so any hat top can be made without a brim or with one of the 2 in the pattern, You can actually get 9 different hats total. Pattern is quite easy if you know the basic stitches.
