What was your inspiration?
I wanted to do a "27 club" series. I embroidered a couple of Amy Winehouse portraits and then decided to find an iconic picture of Janice Joplin and work from that. My next portrait will be Jim Morrison .
What are you most proud of?
That I was able to get the face to resemble the photo. I find that the most difficult part.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
I painted an oval hoop black and inserted a piece of unbleached muslin. I printed a black and white picture, taped it to a window and held the hoop over it and made a light tracing with a disappearing marker. Then I did the embroidery, embellished it with beads and covered the back with a piece of satin lining and added a loop for hanging.
