What advice would you give someone starting this project? I found that I needed to be very organised and labelled everything including the number of cuts of each material, strata etc.

Organization helps keep you on track when there are interruptions. I pin notes in the upper left corners of blocks after I have determined a layout that I like. I use numbers for rows and the alphabet for columns. Using the convention of upper left corner keeps me from turning a block upside down or sideways when I am trying to keep like fabrics apart for a random appearance.
