Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Craftsy Block of the Month 2012 »

Instructions

Buy enough fabric for your entire project. This was my 1st BOM and as a newbie I was unprepared. Unfortunately I could not find sufficient coordinating fabric to finish all 20 blocks. Todays fabrics are all strong bright colors. Next time I'll know better!

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Charity

Style: Whimsical, Casual, Romantic, Mod

Materials

Cotton fabric and thread

What was your inspiration?

I set a goal to become a real quilter and finding Craftsy's free BOM fit the bill perfectly. From the start I learned a LOT and have enjoyed most of the blocks. My 2nd colorway came along when I did the March string blocks. They require strips and I have lots of Black, White, and Red, scraps. B,W,&R is a favorite combo of mine so when it turned out to be too much of a challenge to find sufficient coordinating fabric for this colorway I ended up completing all 20 blocks in B,W&R. Although a bit disappointed I couldn't do all 20 blocks for my original quilt I'm happy with the final lap quilt version. Plus I have a couple of extra blocks to play with. Most of all much of my inspiration has come from all the fabulous blocks created by fellow BOMers. Thanks all!

What are you most proud of?

Redoing some of the blocks to get sufficient number to create a lap quilt. I'm also proud of a couple of designs I created. The spiral with hexis is a favorite in this quilt.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Buy enough fabric up front. I naively thought I could get through the project using a fat quarter bundle I'd bought some time ago.

Very nice Jean!! I am going to draw inspiration from your projects. This reminds me of a quilt my Grandmother would have had especially the colors in it.

Thank you Desna. I had the same "hexi" experience with curved piecing. Decided to skip it for this colorway. But I do love the results! Now its on to FMQ!

Why thank you silverilex! Looks like you did the same thing I did when you hit those string blocks..... used "lots of scraps"! I didn't want to cut into the fabric I'd chosen so ended up starting a 2nd quilt using scraps from Black,White & Red. I like both your fabric combos. Hope you'll do a Christmas quilt too!

Thank you! I love the blocks - not too crazy about making hexis. I doubt I'd have the patient to do a whole quilt with them - although I might consider giving it a go using the spiral block. I really like how that one came out.

Should have typed "patience" (not patient). Although I might become one doing hexis!

Love these colors. I usually don't use the bright colors cuz they aren't me but need to venture out that way someday....give me muted tones any day. Do love the red, white and black one also. Don't know how so many have been able to get more than one quilt done!

Thank you Sewingnana11 - My time is my own since I retired. I fell in love with the original FQ bundle the moment I saw it. I also bought it awhile ago and it was unique among others in the bin. Then again I like working with bright colors - depending on the project. They make me happy!

Jean this is very pretty - I too learned the hard way about not having enough material - I thought I could just use scraps but that didn't work. You have put so much effort into your blocks that you inspire me. Making your second into a lap quilt is such a good idea. Look forward to it when we see what sort of sashing etc Amy does. Not long now.

Thank you Beth. My anticipation is building each day! There are so many beautiful quilts in the works. I wonder if they'll have a special gallery for the finished product...

Jean that would be great if they had a special gallery - there are so many wonderful blocks of the month and it is impossible to have everyone of the members being notified to us our inboxes would be full. I think a special gallery would be just ideal - maybe suggest it to Amy or the Craftsy team?

Oh Jean this is soooo pretty! I learned that particular lesson the hard way too, except I was able to pull in other fabrics... but you were MEANT to make your B W & R one, and this version was your stepping stone ;-) Go you!

Thanks so much Pam. I tend to agree. If it hadn't been for all those scraps I have and trying to conserve fabric for this colorway I never would have started the BW&R. I'm so happy I did because I'm truly happy with both.

Goodness p you HAVE been busy! This one is just the right size to make into a Quillow - had you considered that? If you've got a spare block or a bit of material over, it might make the outside of the pocket that turns into a cushion when it's all folded up.

Thanks Pat! A Quillow! What a fabulous idea for one of the spare blocks. May give that a try once I get it sashed and sandwiched. Hmmmm, at what point do I add the pocket?

You need to quilt it first or you won't be able to get at the bit that's covered on the back by the pocket, and also make the pocket and quilt that too. Then sew the pocket on BEFORE you bind the quilt. If you look at the rather horrible green and yellow thing on my projects page, I've given some information about what to do there. If you need to know any more, you know where to find me!

Perfect thing to do with these blocks - lap quilt. Bet you'll find yourself using it wherever because it's a handy size. Pretty colors too.

Thanks Darns. I really wish I'd bought more fabric to begin with. I have to find a project suited to small FQ bundles. I've bought several before taking this class.

It looks SO Cozy! Just the colors will get you 'warm' & soft inside! :-) I like Lap quilt size the Best myself. They can be used SO often in many different rooms and I also change them out seasonally,

Thank you! I have some friends back in MD where warm & cozy is needed and I'm thinking of gifting this one. FL doesn't get cool very often and I like the idea of it getting some use.
