Simple Composition Book Covers turn any plain, ordinary back-to-school composition book into something that you will love to show off in class. Covered composition books are perfect for journals and even can be used as sketch books. They make ideal gifts for any occasion! The covers will last through many books- when one is full, just remove and replace with a new book.

This pattern guides you with 12 pages including over 25 detailed photos to make a simple, but durable and reusable cover for your composition notebook. It is a suitable project for beginners who are willing to learn new skills. A detailed materials and supply list tells you exactly what you need, and also gives you information about substitute materials in case the exact ones are not available near you. Use your own creativity to add your own personal touch to your covers if you wish.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Fits 9.75"x7.5" x 3/8" thick Composition Book
  • Finished size- 10.5" x 8"


  • Sewing machine able to do zig-zag stitch
  • Scissors for Fabric and Paper
  • Sharp pointed scissors
  • Rotary Cutter, Mat and rulers
  • Iron and Board
  • Marking Pencil or colored Pencils for Marking
  • Parchment Paper or Teflon sheet
  • Peltex 72F Heavy Interfacing with Fusible on Both sides- 1/3 yd
  • Decorative fabric and lining fabric- 1 fat quarter each.
  • Yarn, medium weight- 3-4 yds
  • Thread to coordinate with decortive fabric
  • Narrow ribbon and (or) cording
  • Medium to large decorative button

  • Optional- paints, trims or other embellishments
