Have made the dress with very little swearing!!!!(unusual for me).But there seems to be excess material between the neck and under the arms I have tried taking more from the side and underarm seam but this just seems to have made it worse. Any ideas??

Hi, looking at the sizing for this dress, I need a 4 for my bust, 2 for my waist, and 3 for my hips! Will it still work if, when I cut the pattern out, I go across the three sizes, so use the red line at bust level, then go down to the green line at the waist, and on to the blue line at the hips? (I'm not sure of the correct term for doing this.) Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks very much.

Yes you can certainly mix and match between the sizes by graduating between the lines in the bust, waist and hips. We are all unique shapes and so its unlikely all body shapes match the same as mine :-)

My Apple product says that it can not open the file in Safari. Acrobat Reader is telling me that it is not a true PDF file. Btw i have seen you on youtube and you are an excellent instructor

This is a ZIP file, so you need to unzip the file folder to get to the PDF files inside. Most computers have software to do this automatically when you double click the file. You can find more info about how to deal with a ZIP file here - http://so-sew-easy.com/download-print-pdf-sewing-patterns/
If you still need help, drop me an email. And thanks for the nice comment :-)

Can I ask where you buy your knits, and what type (content, weight, anything?) you use? We don't have much in our local store, and I really hesitate to buy over the internet, without being able to feel what I'm buying and know if it would be appropriate for a dress.

I have the perfect solution for you! A lot of people are in the same boat with not knowing what knit fabrics to buy, so I got a fabric company to make up a swatch kit for the So Sew Easy readers with all sorts of different knit fabrics so you'll be able to feel them before you buy. That should help you pick out which one is best for your projects. You can read about it here http://so-sew-easy.com/new-fabric-swatch-kits-youll-love/
There are also kits for cottons and silky fabrics too. This dress was made in an ITY knit for the striped one and a rayon knit for the black one.

I just down loaded the free pattern, but it prints off on one page. How do I get it to print off like it should so that I have the full pattern?

If you read the instructions that come with the pattern, there are very detailed printing instructions on page 2 including a screen shot of how it works. If you follow those, it will come out tiled perfectly on your paper size. Email me if you have any questions, the email address is also in the instructions. Enjoy the sewing.

Deby, I made up your dress in a black and white print and it turned out so well. So comfy!I had a lady stop me in the street and say "what a lovely dress". That's certainly never happened to me before!thank you for a great pattern, I'll be trying your others for sure. Alison

Yay - that is awesome! Now I really want to see it for myself. Can you load up your completed project here so we can all see your great dress? I've had it happen to me a few times, this dress and others and it makes me feel so good to say that I made it myself. Very well done to you Alison.

anxious to make this cute dress!..What knit specifically would you recommend..I know you said "medium" but saw one completed project of somebody who did not use the correct knit and it resulted in a very poor fit and droopy appearance...the others looked great!!

Deby Coles on craftsy.com
Deby Coles  October 16, 2014

My blue version is an ITY knit and the black and white is a rayon blend I think. You do need more of a medium weight really. Something very thin, stretchy and loose, can create the sort of droopy look you mention, although some of that may also be a fitting issue too. In some ways, fitting with knits can be more complicated because if I cut a pattern in one size and make it with an ITY it might fit fine, but then make it exactly the same in a ponte knit and it might be too snug. Hope it turns out well for you.

Is it possible to make this dress with long sleeves?

Deby Coles on craftsy.com
Deby Coles  September 14, 2014

Absolutely. Just extend the end of the sleeves however long you want them, by following the line on a few extra inches.

Hi Deby! I like this dress very much!
I've tried to sew it for my sister, but I have difficulties with her measurement. Her bust (size 6) is much larger than her hip (size 4), I cut the pattern following this measurement but the resulting pattern tend to be too wide in the underarm part and in the neckline.... what can I do to make the pattern fits better for her? Thank you for your answer!

This pattern didn't turn out well for me, but it wasn't the fault of the pattern! The knit I chose was too lightweight and the neckline turned out way too big and floppy. I love the way the rest of the body fit, but it wasn't salvageable. I think I might give it a try with a heavier knit and modify the neck to a V.

Deby Coles on craftsy.com
Deby Coles  July 19, 2014

Don't despair! You may be able to salvage the loose neckline with some pleats that fold at the corners or from the center outwards. Failing that, cut if off just under the bust, make a new bodice and use the rest as an empire line dress. hate to see anything go to waste.

I've just printed the pattern to use on a fantastic knit fabric I bought at the weekend. Can I just check if the seam allowance is included or do I need to add it on?

Deby Coles on craftsy.com
Deby Coles  July 7, 2014

Seam allowances are included on this pattern, nothing to add. At the top of the sewing instructions, it gives the width, 5/8 inch (1.25cm) included as standard on all sizes. Good luck with the sewing.

Hi Deby, I would like to make this dress but longer, to fall just below the knee. I'm size 3 and 5ft 5in. Would 2 yards of material be enough?

Deby Coles on craftsy.com
Deby Coles  June 5, 2014
Flag as inappropriate

Providing your fabric is wide enough to be able to get both pieces of the dress cut out next to each other, then the length of fabric you will need will be the total length from your shoulder to the hemline, plus a few inches for your seam allowance. If you have a very narrow fabric and can only cut one piece from the width, then you'll need twice as much. Hope this helps.

How would I go about making this sleeveless?

Deby Coles on craftsy.com
Deby Coles  May 8, 2014
Flag as inappropriate

I don't this this dress adapts well to a sleeveless version because of the nature of the wide sleeves. If you simply cut them off at the shoulder, the armhole and shape would be all wrong. Better to try a different pattern if you want a sleeveless dress.

I was wondering if you had any tips on enlarging this pattern for larger clothing sizes.

Deby Coles on craftsy.com
Deby Coles  May 6, 2014
Flag as inappropriate

Tiffany, if you look at the way the existing sizes increase, then you should be able to follow the same increases and draw the pattern a little larger around the outside. But, as we get larger, our proportions change so its not the perfect solution. For example, just because a person has wider hips, it doesn't mean they necessarily have wider shoulders. Test it out on some cheap remnant fabric and refine the fit before cutting your good fabric.

Julie, if you read the instructions that come with the pattern, it shows you there how to print so it will fit to whatever paper size you are using. There is a screen print too, to help. If you can't figure it out, please send me an email to deby@so-sew-easy.com and I'll be happy to help.

Dress and pattern turned out great. I had trouble printing the pattern but when I followed the directions in "how to download my patterns" I realize that when you chose poster print, I separated the pattern and printed all the pieces. Putting it together was another thing all together. LOL
