Basic Skills Necessary:

  • EXPERIENCE: The shorts are easy to make if you have some basic sewing experience. The frills need to be hemmed or edged. Most plain sewing machines have a hemming foot attachment which will double turn the edge and give a neat finish. Alternately if you have a serger/overlocker or your machine has stitch settings for hemming or edging you can use this. With a little experimenting you can find the best method. I simply used the hemming foot on my plain machine. If you have not used a hemming foot before just get a little practice before you start.

Pattern Description:

The Silly Frilly Shorts are just perfect for summer, easy to make and comfy to wear, your girls will love them. A great alternative to a skirt and just as pretty. Mix and match fabrics to get the style you like --- soft and feminine or bright and beachy. The fit is loose and fluffy and the length is just to mid thigh, more like a little skirt than shorts.

You can team them with a simple T shirt top or make the cute shirred top like the one shown in the listing photos.

PDF SEWING PATTERN: the pattern can be printed on a desk top printer using 8.5"x 11" / A4 size paper. The pattern file includes a very detailed sewing tutorial with step by step photos. The computer made digital pattern comes as a color coded, full size range nest with seam allowances included. Instructions for printing and assembling the pattern are included. All seam allowances and cutting instructions are marked on the pattern pieces.

It's best to use the sewing tutorial on your computer so you can zoom the photos. Only print out the pattern pages. Be sure to read the printing instructions first, they are on the Test Square page.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • SIZES: Sizes to fit girls 1 to 10 years --- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Always check the size chart before you start. Waist, Hip and Height measurements are the best guide for selecting the correct size for your child.
  • A size chart in centimeters and inches is included in the pattern.


  • FABRICS: The best fabrics to use are light weight cottons or poly cottons --- poplin, homespun and similar fabrics. I used a poly cotton print. If you would like to make these for the cooler weather you can use pin-whale corduroy or velvet but you will not be able to hem the ruffles with a double rolled hemming foot --- edging stitch or overlock and turn under are the only options.
  • A fabric chart is included in the pattern.

You Will Also Need:

  • 20mm/3/4" elastic, matching thread, hemming foot machine attachment or other hemming/edging method.
  • All lengths are given in the pattern.
