Thank you for making this pattern and making it available for free. I have made about a dozen that I have given. I have used fat quarters for outside and cotton flannel for the lining.

Is fleece also an option instead of flannel?

I make quilts for hospitalized children and was told fleece might produce static so no fleece for comfort quilts.

For the reversible version, have there been any comments regarding the velcro (rough side) being on the outside of the smock (Piece A) and possibly rubbing against the baby's arm?

Honestly In all the years since I have made this pattern and donated we have never gotten any complaints about it though it completely makes sense. I think in part because they often have their lower arms/hands taped up and they are generally still wrapped up at nearly all times in a blanket to help regulate temperatures. You can always make the doubled layer version not reversible as well.

Is flannel being used as opposed to quilters' cotton?

Kymy on craftsy.com
Kymy  July 23, 2015

Yes you need to at least have flannel on the inside of the smock. Quilters cotton takes multiple washes to get soft enough generally and preemies have very sensitive skin. You can do the double layered version with high quality 100% cotton for the outside with flannel on the inside against the babies skin. I hope this helps!

I wish there was a way just to download the pattern & directions but not all the pictures and other peoples comments. It takes up so much ink. Katie

I recommend printing off just the pattern piece pages and viewing the directions on your computer, phone or tablet. I am working on updating the pattern and will be including a 1 page of 'quick directions'

I came across & downloaded this pattern months ago thinking 'I may need it someday'. I remember passing over a Child's Hospital gown last year ~ and then I needed it for our Son's Heart Surgery . . . it took a hunt to find it! Anyhow, THANKYOU for this simple pattern {& the larger sizes}! My Niece was born last week weighing a very surprising 10lbs 11oz. She broke her left arm & dislocated her right shoulder as she SHOT OUT ~ literally less than 2.5hrs after the 1st contraction. These little Smocks are the only thing she can wear ~ she spent her 1st week of life topless and then a Friend & I stitched up some of these. Again ~ THANKYOU!

We made some from quilter's cotton & some from receiving blankets. The receiving blankets were a HIT ~ my SIL went to WM and purchased a pack of them for more tops!

Thank you so much for this pattern. I have been able to make some cute little smocks for my grandson born at 25wks and weighing just 855g (just under 2lb). It has given me something useful and practical to do for him. Thanks again :)

Just to thank you for making this pattern available. I live in Santa Maria, California and we have a new hospital with a NICU. I hope to sew some of these smocks to donate to them, but of course, will check first. You are very generous to post this pattern for free. If my local hospital does not accept them, I will be happy to send some to Gracie's Gowns. Thanks again!
