Basic Skills Necessary:

  • use zipper foot
  • fuse interfacing
  • stitch at various seam allowances
  • trim seams
  • make basic pleats

Pattern Description:

I wanted to mix a vintage style "sunray" pleat detail with an easy-to-use modern, zipped pouch style Clutch. This design also has the option to add a wrist strap that you can pop in or out -converting the clutch into a wristlet as you please.

It's closed with a sunken/ hidden zip construction for a clean, professional-looking finish. The clutch is fully lined & has an internal pocket for extra practicality.

My step-by-step instructions include loads of clear photos & diagrams. All measurements are quoted in both metric & inches.

Take a look at some of the clutches my customers have made on my Facebook page

If you wish add an interesting zip pull, I have posted some free tutorials on my blog:

This design would suit medium to heavyweight satins incl. shantung, brocades, jacquards...or lighter weight fabrics with the addition of some fusible interfacing to add body. The small amount of exterior fabric required makes this a fantastic project for vintage or reclaimed fabrics!

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Approx. 19cm wide x 13 cm tall (71/2" x 5") with a 5cm (2") wide base at the widest part

  • Fabric for the exterior: a 35 x 60cm (14" x 24") piece. Or 35cm (14") length if off the roll
  • Fabric for lining: approx. 65 x 20cm (25 1/2" x 8") piece. or a 20cm (8") length if off the roll
  • Mid weight woven Interfacing for lining, pocket and strap & (if desired) to add body to exterior fabric also: Pellon ShapeFlex Woven Fusible #SF-101 or Vilene Woven fusible G700. To cover all panels: if 90cm (35 1/2") wide, 40cm (16") length; if 51cm(20") wide, 70cm(27 1/2")length
  • Non-Fusible Stabilizer: For a very structured look use "Vilene Extra-Heavy Sew-in" (this comes in 90cm/35" width, you need 20cm/8" length) or "Pellon Peltex 70 Sew-in Ultra firm (this comes in 51cm/20" width -you need 28cm/11" length). For a softer feel try non-fusible "Hair Canvas" a woven stabilizer used in tailoring.
  • Half metre (1 yard) of Fusible Hemming Tape
  • sewing machine with zig-zag stitch & zipper foot
  • iron
  • tailors chalk
  • pins
  • scalpel and cutting board
  • scissors

You Will Also Need:

  • Nylon or metal zipper with 4-6mm (1/4") width teeth, at least 25 cm/12" long
  • Something to tie or attach to your zip puller, eg. ribbon or leather strip

I have been making and sewing since I can remember & have also worked as an accessory designer & pattern maker for a number of years.

I love hand-made but don't believe it should equal messy or amateur looking! I want to help others who feel the same achieve a satisfying, quality finish. My patterns are based on the little tips and tricks I have devised over the years to get professional ...
