Celebrate Memorial Day and the 4th of July with a quilt project using this easy pieced block, compliments of the designer. The scrappy heart in patriotic colors is perfect for a quilt, a placemat, a wall hanging, a banner--or even a pot holder. Show your love of country in red-white-and-blue or stitch it up in other favorite color combos. Of course, it's great in pinks and red for quilted Valentine's projects, too! This easy-to-piece block is a great scrap buster! Cutting directions are given for three finished block sizes: 14", 10-1/2", or 7". Make as many as you need for the project you have in mind. Use scraps, pre-cuts, fat quarters, or fat eighths in your collection. Test your color combos using the blank blocks on page 4 of the directions. Let me see how you use this block--send a jpg to me at barbara.weiland@yahoo.com

I am a published sewing and quilting author with several books and many magazine articles to my credit. My most recent books are The Quilting Answer Book and The Sewing Answer Book, both published by Storey Publishing. I learned to sew from my grandmothers, great grandmother, and my Mom when I was just 7 or 8 years old. I've been sewing ever since. I added quilting to my repertoire in the 1980s and worked for a major quilt book publisher as the Editor-in-Chief for 5 years. Now I have my own business, designing quilts and tote bags and anything else that strikes my fancy. I loved taking a recent mixed media class online and had fun letting my "little girl" play with art materials. Of course, I'm using fabric in my "art." Go to www.joyofsewingandquilting.blogspot.com to see my projects and whatever else I'm up to.
