Pattern Description:

The umbrella girl, a sophisticated version of Sunbonnet Sue, was a popular appliqu motif for quilts during the 1930s. In this version, the girls are outfitted in dresses and umbrellas made from reproduction fabric found in quilts from the 1800s.

  • 1/2 yd background fabric
  • 1/4 yd inner border and binding fabric
  • 3/4 yd outer border fabric
  • small amount of 18 different prints for the applique
  • Scrap of black for shoes and umbrella handles
  • 39" x 30" batting and backing
  • 2 yds lightweight fusible web for machine and quick hand applique or 2 yds freezer paper for fine hand applique
  • Thread to match fabric
