I requested the free Topiary Tiles pattern sometime ago, before I was notified that it had been updated. I finally downloaded the pattern July 29th but have no idea if it is the updated version or not. Would like to start this quilt now but hesitate until I know if I have the latest version. It is an awesome pattern. Thank you for sharing it.

This pattern is beautiful. I am beginner to the quilting craft, are these patterns proofed read before they are downloaded because I have been warned that sometimes you go through all the work and expense and the measurements are not correct. When there is an update to a pattern is it for this reason as I stated I am new to all of this. Thank you

This appears to be the SECOND(?) update of this pattern. I received notice of an update a week or so ago and now here it is again. As I commented on another designer's pattern when it was "updated"... it would be VERY helpful if the updates were noted or highlighted somehow so we know what we're looking for. Thanks

Thank you for the updated pattern! I may use this one with a 10 yr old who really wants to make a quilt. Very nice straight lines with which she can create big blocks quickly.

Hi Amanda,
Thank you very much for the free pattern of Topiary Tiles! I love it! Can you tell me what you mean by "1 Veranda 10"-square" and "1 Veranda Roll-Up"? Do you mean a pkg of Layer Cakes but how many come in a pkg and do you mean a jelly roll? but how many in the roll?
Thanks so much!

Joelsmom on craftsy.com
Joelsmom  July 24, 2014
Flag as inappropriate

usually a layer cake package has 40 10"x 10" squares and the roll ups (Robert Kaufman's version of a jelly roll) are 40 2.5" strips. "Jelly Roll" is a brand name but it has come to be considered the name for all collections of 2.5" X WOF (usually 44") strips. (like Jello is a brand name but most people refer to all gelatin desserts as jello.)

Is it possible to redesign this to use 2.5 in x 44 in strips of Civil War print fabrics? I can cut the squares to what ever size is needed to make this pattern work, but my math and algebra sucks big time.

Amanda Murphy on craftsy.com

You would still need 10'' squares of fabric as well...

Susan, this would be a great scrap project if you don't have precuts. If there is a quilt store in your town, check with them. Copy the pattern and take it with you. If you're like me, you probably don't need to buy more fabric. But, hey. Who buys fabric just because you "need" it? LOL!

The fabric for this is no longer available since it has been 4 or 5 years since it came out, but you can use any set of 2-1/2'' strips and 10'' squares.

Then this would be a good place to start as making a baby quilt is easier than a queen size. You will find all kinds of free info online but basically you are talking about cutting fabric apart and joining it back together and you make the decision on how to do this. You have a back a front and batting in the middle that has to be stitched every few inches or it will bunch up in the wash. I read once in a quilting book that there is no special place in heaven for people who do things the hard way so get started and do one by machine. If you get addicted you can do one by hand after you know what you are doing. Have fun.
