Bought this pattern and kind of confused! It says cut 10 strips 2" but does not say how long they should be. No further instructions on making a 'pieced' backing and there is an easier and more accurate way to make the 10" blocks. Instead of cutting them diagonally and then sewing, place two colors together, mark center seam diagonally on lighter colored material and stitch them together using a 1/4" seam on both sides of the center mark, then cut apart. It makes blocks come out accurately by not trying to sew two bias cut blocks together - eliminates stretching at the bias edge. Learned this making large blocks from a class, Otherwise it is an adorable tree skirt. Mine is all done but backing and binding.

Just makes this pattern more user friendly for beginners. :-)

This is lovely! Is it a good project for beginners?

Thanks, lesjack! I think it's a good project for beginners. Large blocks, easy to put together. For an even simpler finish you can use an envelope or knife-edge finish rather than adding a binding. See that tutorial here: http://www.quiltscapesqs.com/2013/12/tis-season-twelve-days-of-tutorials.html

How did you add on the 4 large 1/2 triangles? I pinned it to the raw edge but if I sew my 1/4" it will make the side uneven.

Hi, PK, The outer triangles are added last; centered and stitched with 1/4" seam allowances, pressed away from the main quilt. Any raw edges will be covered by the binding.

I'm looking for a tree skirt pattern and would love to make this one....it's beautiful. But, I have a narrow tree and was looking for something closer to 40 inches. Does the pattern include directions for making it different sizes? Thanks!

If I have a 8 1/2 " ruler would that work for this pattern, making it smaller by 1"???

Deonn on craftsy.com

That would reduce the size of each finished block by an inch, making the entire project 4" smaller. Probably a great size for a table topper!

Oh Ok, thanks so much. I will need to go out and buy the bigger ruler!!

Kind of misleading when it says download the pattern here...thought it was free but it isn't! May come back for it at a later date...maybe!

I clicked to get this pattern. Tried to remove it from my cart and it won't do it. What's the problem?

Nice, Starcharms, that's terrific! I'd love to see it - you can "add a finished project" picture to the pattern page, if you'd like!

Lovely! Interesting design option... increase the size of the center hole a few inches and turn it into a cape for your son/daughter. (I can see it in school colors, Halloween colors...)
