Lucky Lion Applique Pattern

Lucky Lion Applique Pattern

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • machine applique - instructions included

Pattern Description:

Isn't this lion just dashing? I designed his applique pattern especially for beginners. You can totally make this!

The block is nice and big - 16 inches square! That means the applique pieces are nice and big - and if you decide to make a full quilt it will go together pretty quickly.

You'll receive full-sized pattern pieces - nothing to enlarge or reduce. I also include a smaller pattern that fits on a single page for easy enlarging and reducing, in case you want to also use the pattern for embroidery, collage, painting, or other projects. It'd be cute to make some PJs to match the quilt - my Leo daughter has already requested some.

The pattern includes complete instructions with loads of step-by-step photos and links to video tutorials teaching you every skill you'll need to make this project.

The instructions in the pattern are for a quick and easy machine applique technique that looks very similar to fancy needle-turn applique, but there are also links to videos showing you how to applique with fusible adhesive or use needle-turn if you prefer the look of those methods.

With this single block you can make a wall hanging or pillow cover. Applique the design to a tote bag, a T-shirt, or anything else you can think of.

You could also repeat the same block multiple times in different colors for an Andy Warhol-ish quilt.

Or you can sign up for the Safari Quilt Block of the Month Club. Every month for 12 months you'll get a new applique block pattern of an African animal, progressing in difficulty throughout the year until you're smack in the intermediate skill level. This lion is the fourth block in the series.

  • finished block is 16 inches square

  • one fat quarter background fabric
  • one fat quarter gold for mane
  • scraps for face
  • scrap of brown or black felt for nose
  • brown or black embroidery thread
