My idea of "no waste" starts by leaving the neutral squares as squares and assembling the quilt top into diagonal strips first before joining those strips. It may not be the traditional way to make this block, but saves a lot of cutting and sewing time and reduces the chances of making mistakes.

The background blocks should be 5.5" , not just 5! I re trimmed as I went since I'd already cut all blocks 5" seems to be working.

If you really don't want to waste fabric, cut 140 squares of neutral fabric that are 5 by 5 and 140 that are 4 x 4 inches and then cut them into triangles. Use the bigger triangles in the first round of neutral fabric and the smaller ones in the second round. Worked fine for me.

Thank you for updating this pattern, unfortunately to late for me. As my fabric is already cut incorrectly. :(

Yes, I too wishes I had known to cut the white fabric squares at 5 x 5 1/2. This is my first quilt and the first block could not be cut at a 13 1/2 square. I found it mathematically impossible. I will continue with what I have and see what I can do when I put all the blocks together. For being my first quilt, I am not feeling sure about the accuracy patterns and directions that are free. It took time and money to buy all the supplies and it's kinds of hard to continue on with it. I've lost my excitement with it. You quilt and the pictures look very nice though, I'm glad you made a nice quilt for us all to see. Thank you, Sharon

You instructions don't mention sewing on the last four triangles that are shown in the photo. Looking at the photo I can see them and figure out what to do but I'm thinking a newbie might be confused as there is no reference to them in the written instruction. Love the look of this quilt and will be making it soon to use up some of my charm squares.

Strange that Craftsy has never published a correction to this pattern. The first round of triangles have to be cut from pieces of neutral fabric that are 5 x 5. The second round can be 5 x 5, but not the first.

Please correct this pattern. The neutral squares must be larger. I made mine 5 3/4 and it worked really well. Because of the error in the pattern, I was required to re-purchase the neutral fabric. Very lucky the store had just enough left on the bolt.

Learned a hard lesson here. Read the comments before you download or purchase a pattern. This pattern has errors. Would have been nice to receive an email or message from Craftsy regarding this error. It is an easy one to fix . . . if you haven't already cut all your squares!

Lovely quilt. But I don't think I would be messing around with all those triangles, but would only use them for the edging with only squares in the main part of the quilt. Much less sewing, much less chances of errors!

Wish I would have read the comments before I started.Thought I had done something wrong since I couldn't square mine to 13 1/2 inch squares. Has anyone sewn it together with points missing and how does it look? Maybe I should design a different pattern for my squares.Very disappointed.......

I cut all the pieces as instructed but when I put the first block together, I couldn't square it to 13 1/2. Thinking I did something wrong, I took it to my quilting expert and she said the size of the neutral fabric squares was not large enough. If I sewed the blocks together I would lose the points. What happened?

I had the same problem! I ended up taking less than 1/4" allowance when sewing the main parts, then a bit more when adding the last 4 triangles. I fixed the problem, but was so sad to get a pattern with wrong directions.

I wish I had read the comments before I cut my fabric! I also found I lost the tips to all my squares if I used 5" neutral squares. I found by using 5 1/2" neutral squares, I was able to have a 1/4" seam allowance all the way around the square. I am still way shy of a 13 1/2" square, though. I'd like to see how this is accomplished using the sizes in the description!

I had the same problem today and thought I did something wrong. Glad it's not me but sad that I cut my neutral fabric 5 inches. I guess I could buy more and cut it 5 1/2 inches and save the others for another project.

Thanks for this pattern. I love it. I just finished making a quilt for my Mom's 80th birthday using your pattern and directions. Mine started out based on the directions but I ended up having to modify because I ran out of fabric and had to continue with what I had, but it turned out nice. I even made her a pillow to match. Thanks again!
