Since retiring from my teaching career I've discovered that there is life outside of the classroom! I spend parts of most of my days indulging in my favorite hobbies of quilting and sewing. I started designing patterns as an experiment, and no one was more surprised than I was to find that other people liked my little designs. I try to write my patterns in such a way that beginning quilters can follow them. I include lots of details, photos, and little informative notes, so even if they look complicated, the instructions should be easy to follow.

It's a birthday party! Balloons, ribbons, and a big, cheerful "Happy Birthday". Plop this mug rug on a desk for a surprise birthday gift, roll it and stick it into a cup all tied up with a bow, or pop it into an envelope and send it as a birthday card. This is one card that the receiver will not be tossing away.
I made this mug rug in red, white, and blue in memory my dad. He was a WWII veteran whose birthday was in July. He loved these patriotic colors of the flag more than any others. Now, I've learned that a former student serving in Afghanistan is feeling rather down. His birthday comes up soon, so that's where this is heading.
Any bright colors will work nicely, and you might want to choose your birthday person's favorite colors.
This is a fast little project made with quickly fused applique and a bit of easy embroidery for the balloon strings.
Mug rugs are not only just the right size for a drink and small snack, but they will also add a bright splash of color to a coffee table or desktop.
