About the designer

I've been quilting, mostly traditional, for 13 years now. Memories of my great-grandmother were my reason for making my first quilt. And, I hated every tedious minute of it. When I finished the ...

This is a great idea. Measurements have not been a problem for me as I always get extra material. I am ready to try this. I just purchased the new galaxy fat quarters from RJR Jinny Beyer. I think this will be wonderful. Since I have done my quilts completely by hand it takes a long time to complete. It's time to purchase the sewing machine to feed my quilting habit.

Fortunately, I haven't made this quilt yet. I purchased the pattern some time ago but there were other things that needed to come first. I just received this morning the THIRD revision. I'm really hesitant about making it at all now. Maybe I'll wait for a few months till all the measurements are straightened out and confirmed.

Stenobabe, Everything is fine now. The only problems were the measurements for the backing.

I would like to caution anyone who buys this pattern. Don't get me wrong, my quilt came out looking good. However, be cautious with the measurements for the stripes and the small squares. Even though I cut accurately, somehow the pieces did not line up. Also, the backing yardage indicated in the pattern is not accurate. The 5 1/2 yard is not big enough. I must now go back to the fabric store and hope they still have the fabric I originally purchased. The Quilt Sandwich app is telling me that I need at least 8 yards for a backing with a 2 1/2 to 3 overhang, not the 5 1/2 the pattern states. In summary, this pattern was frustrating and not reliable with the measurements. I will make again but I will not be trusting the pattern's measurements. I will do my own measurement for the stripes and small square, as well as rely on the Quilt Sandwich app for the measurement of the backing.

I'm sorry you had difficulty with the pattern. While you were definitely correct about the yardage for the backing (I recalculated and think 7 is more than adequate - and I've changed the pattern to reflect that), I think you might not be right about the rest. I just ran though those measurements again as well, and they appear to be fine. I haven't heard from anyone else who had an issue with this. That doesn't by any means mean that there aren't any (because obviously I can make mistakes - see backing measurements above as an example) but from the top I made and the emails of others who've made this pattern, I don't think there are any issues with the piecing measurements.

What's the layout on the backing for the full size? I have 5 1/2 yr material but doesn't seem enough. My finished top measures 80 1/2 x 92. I'm sure it's off from pattern due to stripes not lining properly as stated in the pattern.

You are right about the backing measurements being off. I had miscalculated the twin backing as well. The pattern has been updated - and I'm so very sorry for my mistake. If anyone needs to get in touch with me quickly, please use the email address on the pattern - I don't get notifications when messages are left here.

How many squares or layer cakes would it take to make a queen size? I love this and it looks easy and I am a newbie at quilting and need a wedding gift by September. Many thanks.

All of the sizes are made to only use one layer cake (a 42 piece precut, 10"square). The twin only uses 35 pieces though.

For the sizes above Full, I just expanded the sashing so it would still just take one layer cake.

How do I go about ordering the materiel for this quilt

I don't sell material, but if you want to use the same materials I did, I used:

Moda's Little Black Dress layer-cake
Kona Black
and I don't remember the brand name of the off-white I used in the sashing, it wasn't a solid, but the print wasn't prominent.

What size squares are these, look for 10 squares?

Hi, lianepowe. I used one precut layer cake, but if you want to make your own, it's just 42 squares, all 10". (35 for the twin size)
