Researching one's own family history can be an intriguing experience. Naturally, I figured the next step would be to preserve this unique story in a quilt. Wouldn't this make a terrific gift for someone special?
When I didn't find a design that struck my interest; I figured it was time to jump in and make my own version. My inspiration came from my sister and after creating the first design in 2006; was able to add a second design this year just for her -- celebrating her love of genealogy research. Both designs are now available as downloadable patterns in my Craftsy store.
Appliqued Family Tree Quilt with Birdhouses (Design Two):
For this second design, I wished to create a quilted version to represent the family tree featuring colorful birdhouses. Along with beautiful gardens, it's also a magical place for sharing those special outdoor spaces with the birds. These appliqued birdhouses represent the family homes that are part of this family history, with their names attached below. Added to the base of the tree are elements that provide a relaxing bench and birdbath for all to enjoy a visit to this tranquil spot.
This design uses the fused machine applique technique and the product PhotoFabric(tm) for printing out the name information.
This PDF pattern has colored illustrations, clear instructions, and full-size templates for the applique pieces that have already been reversed for the fusible applique process. Use my fabric choices as your guide and have fun with this project.
Sewing began my 'adventure with fabric' in seventh grade.
Fast forward about three decades, and it was machine applique that won my attention. Presently, I like to blend applique with scrap quilting techniques; and share my e-patterns here. I do still love new fabrics; however, am on a quest to turn my fabric stash into scrappy quilts. Visit me at my website or blog to find out more.
