Pattern Description:

The Story Behind The Pattern

I have dedicated this pattern to a very special Tiger Cub ........

A weak cry is heard....

"My name is Dacca; I am a Bengal Tiger Cub, me and my brothers Raipur & Raniganj have been abandoned by our mother. I am so very cold and hungry"

....Someone with warm hands and kind eyes hears the cry. Takes them in her arms. Some time later another cry is heard, but this time with happiness .....

"I am safe, warm on my heat pad, I did cry when I first got here, I was scared, well really scared but when I looked up and saw the woman with the warm hands and kind eyes almost crying with me I knew I had found a new mother, she sat with me and my brothers for hours, feeding us milk. I now I feel so much stronger. I have so much fun here with my brothers, we love playing in the bathtub and hiding behind the sofa. We are getting bigger everyday but that's no problem for our mother, we are not the first Tiger Cubs she has looked after and I'm sure we won't be the last!"

This person was Helen Delaney Martini. Helen and her husband Fred longed for a child but tragically they lost their first child then Helen couldn't have any more. They started to fill the hole in their hearts that their lost child left with pets. Fred started working at the Bronx zoo and often came home with Tiger Cubs. Helen greeted and cared for them with a mothers love. She went on to become the founder of the Bronx zoos animal nursery in 1944 and also its first woman zoo keeper.

Want to learn more of this lovely story? I recommend a book written by George Ella Lyon called "Mother to Tigers"

(Please note I am in no way connected to the making or advertising of the book, It is just a story that I read that touched by heart and have no doubt it will yours too.)

The Pattern When looking at original versions of vintage patterns for some people they can seem very daunting with sometimes minimal instructions that are common in vintage patterns, with wools that no longer exist and terminology that is no longer in use .... ...

I have lovingly rewritten the pattern in an easy to read layout, up to date terminology and added step by step photos making this an enjoyable knit and ensures this lovely pattern isn't lost forever!

What was originally a very complicated pattern I have turned this into a very easy pattern to follow, It has been written row for row (instead of the usual eg. repeat rows 5 to 8 10 times) Even Stocking Stich has been written row for row (commonly written as eg. work stst for the next 12 rows) This is to ensure the pattern is kept as simple as possible so all you need to do is tick off each row as you go along.

I have included a photo on every step of the pattern making this perfect for a beginner wanting to try something a bit more challenging. But would equally suit a more experienced knitter who would like to keep this pattern alive.

Please Note:
To the best of my knowledge the original pattern is out of copyright and therefore in the public forum. However the format that I have reproduced this and all the photos are copyrighted to me.

I have put a lot of hours into reproducing this. Please DO NOT copy & resell the Pattern in this format. If you wish to do this please find the original pattern and reproduce in your own creative way.

Thank You for Looking!
