Pattern Description:

I started noticing scarves with fringes along the edges this year, and I really like how interesting and elegant they look.

When I started thinking about how to design a knitted scarf with fringing along the long edge, what first held me back was that fringes on scarves have always been a bugbear for me: they inhibit laundry because they invariably turn into a tangled (sometimes felted) mess and are never quite the same after a trip through the washer (never the dryer! Too risky.).

The other thing is that fringes are almost always added when the item is finished and these days we have such great multi-colored yarns available that it would be hard to match up the colors without wasting a lot of yarn (for me, continuing the colors into the fringe is an important design detail).

So that got me thinking about three things: fringing the long edge of a scarf; how to create a non-tangling fringe; and integrating the fringe into the color progression. E Voila! The Lush Fringed Scarf satisfies all three and it's pretty easy to make, requiring beginner knitting skills and only rudimentary crochet skills. And, if crochet scares you, I've even provided alternate instructions for knitting that part.

NOTE: I've specified the yarn and needles I used for two versions but you can use whatever you fancy, or whatever you have to hand, keeping in mind your results will vary. The single-color version is made with Silk City Paloma, and the drape and flow of the finished fabric is gorgeous.

Experiment! Enjoy! I certainly did.

I've been knitting for (OMG!) over 50 years. But wait: I started when I was about 4 so that's not so bad!

I love things that look hard to make but are actually really easy, and I very much enjoy the challenge of off-the-wall construction techniques.

I had my own mail order knitting kit business for a while, and I was President and co-founder of the Knitting Guild of Canada. I am also a ...
