This illusion is based on a a 3300-year-old painted limestone bust of Nefertiti, the wife of Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten. It was discovered in Amarna, Egypt, in 1912, and is now housed in the Neues Museum, Berlin.
The 3D nature of the image makes it work well as an illusion. Photographs do not do justice to illusion knits. When you look at the piece from directly in front you only see stripes. When you look from the side the image of Nefertiti appears and she really looks as though she is standing out from the wall.
The wall-hanging shown shown was made in DK yarn. Any yarn can be used though changing the yarn might change the overall size.
The pattern has various versions of the chart, including one intended for tablet users, to make it as easy as possible for you to make this without ever losing your place.
