Basic Skills Necessary:

  • working with cable needle
  • working with colours (specifically: how to twist between colour changes to avoid holes)
  • optional border: how to do basic crochet stitches

Pattern Description:

If you're going to knit an heirloom blanket for a baby, then make it as special as your own little ray of sunshine! The strikingly beautiful Muted Highland Rainbow pram blanket or car seat throw is certainly different and stunning.

A muted rainbow of colourful, wide stripes combine with a variety of textures and different aran-style patterns to make this just as pretty knitted in one colour as in 6. If you use the recommended merino DK-weight yarn, then you'll create a lasting heirloom that can be used all year round, will cope with wear, tear and machine-washing, yet be as cushy and soft as a baby blanket needs to be when next to delicate skin.

The blanket is knitted all in one piece with 4.5mm knitting needles: 6 stripes, each using around 105m/110yds of a different rainbow colour of DK (worsted) weight yarn, and using a different aran stitch-pattern. Its optional, simple border is crocheted afterwards using a 4.5mm crochet hook to stabilise the edges.

Measuring approx 28 x 18 inches (70 x 46cm) when finished, it's aimed at knitters who are already confident using a cable needle and working with colour. The knitting pattern is a 2MB pdf that's available to download immediately after payment.

To try to accommodate all knitting preferences, I've provided both written and charted instructions. I've also laid out the knitting pattern so that you can print only the specific pages that you need, depending on whether you prefer your instructions row-by-row, or as individual stripe-patterns.
