Pattern Description:

Nami, which means wave in Japanese, is a light weight cotton cardigan knit from the bottom up. With wide ribbing, it fits nicely over the hips and is looser in the body. The sleeves are picked up and knit from the arm scythe to the cuff and the neck, button and buttonhole bands are picked up and knit after the body and sleeves are complete.


28 sts and 36 rows on needle size US4 (3.5mm) in stockinette is 4" (10cm) knit flat
32 sts and 35 rows on needle size US4 (3.5mm) in Body Cable and Lace pattern is 4" (10cm) knit flat
32 sts and 35 rows on needle size US5 (3.75mm) in Sleeve Cable and Lace pattern is 4" (10cm) knit in the round
Gauge is measured after wet blocking the swatch

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Finished bust circumference of 32 (35, 38, 41, 44, 47, 50) inches
  • Finished length of 21.25 (21.5, 21.5, 22, 22.75, 23, 23) inches
  • Intended to have 1 to 2 inches of positive ease (choose a finished bust size 1 to 2 inches larger than your actual bust size).


  • Size US2 (2.75mm) double point needles for sleeve cuffs (worked in the round) or circular needle if doing magic loop
  • Size US4 (3.5mm) 32" (40" for larger sizes) circular needle for body in cable pattern (worked flat)
  • Size US5 (3.75mm) double point needles for sleeves in cable pattern (worked in the round) or circular needle if doing magic loop
  • 1035 (1110, 1170, 1334, 1460, 1620, 1700 ) yards fingering weight cotton yarn

You Will Also Need:

  • Cable needle
  • 8 ~ 5/8 (16mm) buttons
  • 4 removable stitch markers
  • 5 stitch holders or waste yarn
  • Tapestry needle
  • Needle and thread for sewing buttons
