This pattern includes both the shawl and a "choli" top.
Cholis are tight fitting Indian tops that are worn under saris. They can be very simple or very elaborate. They are characterized by a decorative border on the bottom of the body and the sleeves.
This twinset starts with a short-sleeved top that is inspired by an Indian choli. It is fitted through the use of a ribbed lace on the bottom of the body and the sleeves. The beading is optional. The lace causes gentle scallops around the bottom of the border. Larger sizes have more purl sts between the lace panels making it very easy to upsize or alter to in-between sizes. The choli is reversible in that the lower neckline can be worn to the back or the front. Fashionable cholis in India frequently have very low-cut back necks.
The other piece of this twin set is a rectangular shawl that uses the same lace stitch pattern. The shawl is worked in the same weight of the yarn but on a much larger needle. The shawl has a simple rectangular shape continuing the choli theme. A rectangular cover-up called a dupatta or chunni is used all over northern India.
