Basic Skills Necessary:

  • ssk, k2tog and sk2p decreases

Pattern Description:

This triangular shawl is worked from the center out in a lace pattern that resembles large and small flames. It was inspired by Mary Chapin Carpenter's "A Keeper for Every Flame."

The lace pattern is both charted and written. The pattern is easy to remember, and includes "resting" rows of purls on all the wrong side rows. The different shawl sizes are created by working extra repeats of one portion of the lace pattern.

Yardage for each size:
Xsmall - 300 to 325 yards (275 to 300 m)
Small - 350 to 400 yards (320 to 365 m)
Medium - 550 to 600 yards (500 to 550 m)


24 sts to 4" in pattern before blocking

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Xsmall - 25" x 16" (63.5 cm x 40.5 cm)
  • Small - 46" x 21" (117 cm x 53.5 cm)
  • Medium - 56" x 25" (142cm x 63.5 cm)


  • 300-600 yards (275-550 m) fingering weight yarn
  • US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, 24"to 48" (60 to 120 cm) long
  • blocking supplies
  • 1-4 stitch markers
