(6) Name: 'Knitting : Cocteau

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • provisional cast on
  • knit
  • purl
  • work in the round
  • decrease (instructions given in the pattern)
  • cast off (bind off)
  • pick up stitches

Pattern Description:

Simple, stylish, easy. Three words which describe this gorgeous sweater to a tee.

No frills, no fuss. Cocteau makes a statement with tidy lines, slim fit and the envelope neck, which is a simple solution to the age old problem of getting that sweater over the baby's head.

Colour pops in just the right places, a flash of colour at the hem, wrist and neck.

Worked in the round from the hem up, the sleeves are knitted on after the body is finished. No seaming required!

Economical on yarn, the first 5 sizes use less than one skein of the nominated yarn, small amounts of leftovers can be used for the trims.


28 sts x 40 rows using MC and 2.75 mm needles over 10 cm in stst in the round

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Ages 3 (6, 9, 12, 18 months, 2, 3, 4 years)
  • Chest (child) 40.5 (43, 45.5, 48, 50.5, 53, 55, 57.5) cm 16.2 (17.2, 18.2, 19.2, 20.2, 21.2, 22, 23)"
  • Ease = +10% - see the schematic for garment measurements


  • Needles I work in the round using the magic loop method. If you prefer to use a different method please choose your needles accordingly.
  • 2 mm (US 0) 100 cm / 40" circular (smaller)
  • 2.75mm (US 2) 100 cm / 40" circular (larger)
  • 4mm (US 6) 100 cm / 40" circular (used only once, at the hem fold line)
  • Or size needed to achieve gauge

You Will Also Need:

  • 4 Locking st markers (use small safety pins or scrap yarn)
  • 2 st markers
  • 4 st holders (or scrap yarn)
  • Darning needle
  • Pins
