Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit, purl, increase, decrease, basic intarsia, short rows

Pattern Description:

This nautically themed sweater will look great on the littlest man in your life. Choose one of two intarsia motifs inspired by the story of St. Brendan the Navigator, an Irish monk said to have sailed from Ireland to Newfoundland in the 6th century. A classic sailor style collar provides the perfect finishing touch for your little voyager's traveling wardrobe. Skills required beyond basic knit and purl include knowledge of intarsia and short rows.


20 sts x 24 rows=4" in stst on size 6 US (4.0mm) needles

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • To fit sizes: 0-6 (6-12 mo., 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 years).
  • Finished chest circumference:18 (20, 22, 24, 26) in.


  • DK weight yarn: 250 (300, 375, 450, 550) yards DK or light worsted weight yarn in MC, and 100 (110, 110, 120, 120) yards in contrast color (CC). Sweaters shown use a 100% mercerized cotton, 205 yards/100g(sailboat), and a 100% wool, 230 yards/100g (whale) in
  • Size 5 and 6 (US) needles (3.75 & 4.0 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge. 24 or 32" circulars are suggested, but straight needles can also be used.
