Skill Level:

little skill level requirement Novice

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit
  • purl
  • p2tog
  • p3tog
  • magic loop method or double pointed needles when decreases get too small

Pattern Description:

This is a reversible hat that can be worn in two ways - with the insides of the diamonds facing out (wrong side out) like the first picture, or with the diamonds facing in (right side out) like the last picture.

There is a lot of stretch to this hat as the ZigZag pattern is ribbed - I have a small head at 55cm/21.5? - it fits nicely, yet there is so much room in there for a larger head!

The yarn I have used is Erika Knight's 'Vintage Wool'. It is an Aran weight yarn made from 100% British Wool, spun in Yorkshire. It works great with this pattern, the wool is super warm but because the hat doesn't cling too much you don't over heat.

I wanted to make something chunky, yet not too heavy, with an interesting pattern that would be suitable for knitters of all skill levels.

What I love about this pattern is the flower that appears on the crown of the hat after you have made the decreases. The 'petals' reach right down to the brim, and depending on which way around you wear the hat you can vary how much this stands out. I still haven't decided which way around I prefer it.

I have added into the pattern the option of making a longer rib in k2, p2, for those that prefer a turn up rim, which is the same on both sides. As you can see from the photos, the k2, p1 rib I have used looks quite different on the inside and the outside of the hat.

This hat requires around 75g of Erika Knight 'Vintage Yarn', which is available in 50g balls from a variety of different stockists.

1 x 4mm (US6) x 30cm circular needle
1 x 5mm (US8) x 30cm circular needle (you will need to use the magic loop method or double pointed needles when the decreases get too small).

Gauge - 27 sts and 28 rows to 10cm/4? in ZigZag pattern.

Size - one size, measures approx 54cm/21.25? when laid flat, however the pattern is ribbed so there is loads of stretch

This hat is really simple and I would recommend it to beginners wishing to go up a level. The only stitches used are knit and purl, with the exception of p2tog and p3tog in the decrease section.

My mum taught me to knit when I was 5 - I have early memories of sitting with a skein around my wrists while she wound it into a ball. I had a big imagination though and I suppose got interested in other things until I was older. When I was 21, I found myself at a houseparty, and one of the girls there had a bag of knitting. I thought it was so cool, I made her remind me there and then, and since ...
