Pattern Description:

Yarden (pronounced yar-dn) is a lace and stockinette stitch shawl that gets its wavy lines from increases and decreases in the lace sections. It begins with a garter stitch tab and is worked from the top down making it an easy shawl to enlarge by working additional repeats of the lace and stockinette stitch sections. The pattern includes instructions for fingering and dk weight yarns, but you could work this in any yarn weight. In some ways Yarden is a blank slate that you can customize by your yarn and color choices. One of my testers used alpaca for the stockinette sections and Tosh Merino Light for the lace sections so she had both color and textural contrast. Another tester used two contrast colors and knit stripes in the stockinette sections which added lots of visual interest. You could knit each stockinette stripe in a different color to use up leftovers or try a variegated yarn. If you want to play up the stitch pattern, you could make it in one color. It's a very versatile pattern and I hope you'll have fun with it as you make it your own!

RECOMMENDED YARN:
Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light - 1 skein each of MC and CC
[Madelinetosh Pashmina - 1 skein each of MC and CC]
Actual yardage used was approximately 420 [340] yards of MC and 210 [165] yards of CC. Please note that some, but not all, the test knitters used more than one skein of the MC for the fingering version. Having a second skein or a partial second skein is insurance should you need it.

Gauge: 22 [16] stitches/4"

Pictured in Pashmina in Silver Fox MC and French Gray CC.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • fingering version: approximately 58" x 24"
  • sport/dk version: approximately 56" x 21"
  • Size is easily altered by working more or fewer pattern row repeats.

Materials:

  • fingering yarn: 420 yards of main color/210 contrast color
  • sport/dk yarn: 340 yards of main color/165 contrast color

You Will Also Need:

  • US size 6/4 mm 40" circular needle or size to obtain gauge
  • stitch markers
